Bulk Substrate Ingredients:
500 grams Coco Coir
500 grams Vermiculite
100 grams of Gypsum
Needed At Home:
16 Cups Boiling Water
5-gallon bucket with lid
First add coco coir, vermiculite and gypsum to a 5-gallon bucket. Mix all the dry ingredients together in the bucket before you add the boiling water. Next, boil 16 cups of water, then carefully pour the boiling water into the 5-gallon bucket. Close with a tight sealing lid. Let it sit to hydrate and cool for approximately 24 hours. Ideally keep insulated to aid the pasteurization process. Once room temp, double check to make sure it is at field capacity and it is ready to go.
You can store pasteurized bulk substrate for weeks in a sealed bucket. If it dries out you can add more boiling water to pasteurize and re-hydrate it. You can wring it out to field capacity if it’s too wet. I have used mine 3 weeks after I made it and didn’t have to add water to it. Just stir it up really well before using it, to distribute the moisture that settled to the bottom.
You can also split the recipe and only make half of you only need it for one inflatable monotub.
